Thinking of getting your Eyebrows Tattooed? Everything you need to know!

Are you thinking about getting your brows done? Investing in permanent makeup is a big decision. Spending hours researching artists in your area, going in for a consultation and dropping most likely $500+ on the procedure, you want to make sure you properly prepare your skin BEFORE the procedure and follow the aftercare provided.

As a professional makeup artist and master cosmetic tattoo artist, THIS IS MY JAM! I love all things beauty, but most importantly, I LOVE educating clients.

Did you know that every artist has a list of pre care instructions and aftercare instructions, and how well you follow them DIRECTLY affect your healed results?

Poor aftercare, equal poor healed results which causes you frustration, additional appointments needed and additional costs.

It is absolutely crucial to follow your artists pre care and aftercare instructions. Each artists instructions may differ, but for the technique I do, these instructions have allowed my clients to have smooth healing with minimal to no scabbing resulting in beautiful healed brows.

Pre Care Instructions:

No Chemical Peels 1 month prior

Avoid sun exposure (laying out tanning etc) for 2 weeks prior

NO retinols or glycolic acids for 2 weeks

No alcohol or caffeine 24 hours before - these thin the blood, which causes excess bleeding. Excess bleeding creates more work for the artist, resulting in additional trauma. Additional trauma means longer healing process.. You get the point!

Aftercare Instructions

After your brows are done, there is a fluid that comes out called lymphatic fluid. This is a fluid created by the skin when there is trauma caused and its trying to heal itself. If you let this fluid build up on your brows and dry, it will form into a scab. It is important for the first hour after, in 5-10 minute intervals to blot your eyebrows with dry/clean paper towel. You want to use the "smooth" side to soak up the lymph fluid that comes out from causing trauma to the skin. By soaking this up, it will reduce the amount of scabs that form. I provide my clients with pre cut paper towels in their aftercare kits. It is important while doing this that your hands are clean and you do not re use the same paper towel. At first the paper towel will have a creamy brown fluid on it. That is the fluid mixed with a bit of pigment. Don't panic. If the pigment is coming out like that, it wasn't going to stick anyways!

Do not touch or rub the healing area to avoid infection.

Starting the night of, carefully wash your eyebrows in warm water with a mild cleanser. I recommend the Cetaphil gentle cleanser. Do this twice a day. This will also help wash off any lymph fluid from earlier that day before it dries onto the brows. Do not use any medicated soap on them as it will pull the pigment out or cause discolouration. Pat the eyebrows dry with a paper towel, avoid use of a cloth or hand towel.

Apply a rice size amount of aftercare balm on your brows morning and night. If your artist does not provide this, you can purchase A&D ointment yourself. I find this the best to use. If your eyebrows are greasy or goopy, pat the excess ointment off. Complete this step until the scabs are all gone.

Continue washing the brows gently morning and night, patting dry and applying ointment for 7-10 days.

Do not apply any makeup on your brows while you are washing them and applying ointment.

No sun exposure, saunas, swimming or heavy sweating for 14 days.

Do not pick the scabs. Allow the skin to heal naturally, picking can cause a loss of pigment, and unsatisfactory healed results.

DO NOT get ANY skin treatments for a minimum of 6 weeks after. If you are having a treatment done, please inform the technician that you have recently had your eyebrows tattooed.

After your brows have fully healed, protect the pigment by using sun block on them daily.

Using products that contain glycolic, lactic, aha and retinol acids will prematurely fade your pigment.

As always, If you experience any swelling, blistering or puss, discontinue use of your aftercare products and consult a doctor immediately.

By following proper aftercare and taking care of your brow tattoo, regardless of if you have micro bladed hair strokes, a combination brow or powder brows, will allow for the tattoo to heal with optimal pigment retention.
